Hiring Process

Application

It is very important to make certain the entire application is filled out accurately and completely. This form will represent you during the entire selection process. (Put N/A where something does not apply to you.)

After your application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirmation of acceptance. When the next written exam is scheduled, you will receive an email invitation to participate in the exam. Please note: This process can take several weeks, as the written test is generally offered every four months.

Testing

  1. Following a review of your application, you will be invited to take a written exam. The written exam measures reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and math skills, similar to those you have probably taken in school.  These tests are not intended to assess your knowledge of specific skill sets or procedures unique to policing.
  2. Upon successful completion of the written exam, the results will be evaluated and we will select a group of applicants to continue to the Assessment Center, which is comprised of six classroom exercises designed to assess your potential to be trained as a Police Officer.
  3. Those candidates who pass the Assessment Center will be invited to a panel interview and fitness test.
  4. Upon successfully completing the above steps, a background investigation will be conducted by the Oshkosh Police Department. Applicants are advised to be very accurate when completing the Personal History Statement. Any falsification or misrepresentation may be cause for rejection.
  5. Candidates who pass the background investigation will have a personal interview with the Chief of Police.
  6. Candidates who pass the Chief’s interview will be placed on an eligibility list that remains in effect for up to two years.
  7. Candidates on the eligibility list may receive a conditional job offer. Conditional offers are subject to the candidate successfully passing a comprehensive medical and psychological examination at OPD's expense.
  8. All recommended hires must receive formal approval from the Police and Fire Commission.
